The Wednesday Activity Programme
All fifth formers at Radley College are encouraged to spend a couple of hours every Wednesday afternoon during their Michaelmas Term working on projects that help the local community.
Examples of partnership projects with local primary schools are as follows:
- Radley fifth formers help out as Class Room Assistants at Radley Village Primary School. This partnership helps the primary school gain valuable help for their young learners and helps the fifth formers gain valuable work experience and develop useful work related skills.
- At St Nicolas Primary School fifth formers from Radley have been providing 'Buddy Reading' support for two classes. This involves one-one reading and help with written work in the school library. This gives the primary children a great opportunity to practise their reading and writing skills in a less formal environment, which helps them to improve their literacy skills. It also gives the Radley boys a chance to gain valuable work experience, develop new skills and have the satisfaction of knowing their contribution helps to make a difference. In addition the Radley boys are running an after school chess club, which is very popular.
- Other Radley fifth formers work at St Swithun's Primary School listening to children read and helping them to develop their ICT skills. The primary children clearly benefit from the one-one attention and the Radley boys gain valuable skills.
- The Mary Hare Primary School for the Deaf is a very unique environment where Radley fifth formers volunteer their time. They design and run technology lessons and help the pupils to carry out the work, which involves making various paper structures. The Radley boys also help to run soccer practise. The primary students respond well to the Radley boys and clearly benefit from their input and the Radley boys gain valuable skills as above.
