Oxfordshire Uganda Partnership
In conjunction with the Oxfordshire International Education Bureau, many schools from around Oxfordshire were linked to schools in Uganda. Staff representatives from each school visited partner schools in October 2004 with reciprocal visits in March 2005. The aim of the links is to share good practice, provide professional development opportunities and to enhance the teaching of schools in both countries.
Many of the links have been very successful, with further visits taking place during 2005/6. One of the key focuses has been sustainability. In the UK we have so much to learn from LEDCs as their very culture of what to do with waste, how to provide for basic needs - indeed, what basic needs actually are - and so on is so different to ours. Exposing our pupils to some of these issues - along with many more - has been an eye-opening experience and is changing their perceptions of the role of the UK within the Global Community and breaking down barriers - we too have much to learn.
