Chemist of the Year Gallery 23 October 2008
Schools in Oxfordshire nominated one outstanding Year 13 student for the Sixth Form Chemist of 2008 Award, hosted by The Society of Chemical Industry and OISSP. Prizewinners were presented with certificates and book tokens at the University of Oxford Physical and Theoretical Building, on Thursday 23rd October. Parents and teachers joined students who also had a guided tour of the Central Research Laboratories. Dr Hugh Cartwright made an intriguing demonstration of ‘Chemical Magic’ after which presentations were made by Professor Peter Atkins. Tom Kempton, Project Director of the OISSP, said, ‘the event is a chance to celebrate the talent of exceptional students within our county’s schools. The University and SCI’s involvement will raise aspirations and encourage students to apply their Chemistry skills in higher education and in industry.’
Celebration Event 14 October 2008
An audience of science teachers, head teachers and education experts from across Oxfordshire gathered at County Hall in October to celebrate science with Oxfordshire Independent/State Schools Partnership. This was an opportunity talk about how we encourage pupils to engage with science subjects and to extend their scientific knowledge and understanding. Guests were motivated by a stirring speech from Sir David King. He reminded us of the growing importance of science as we face the uncertainties of a changing world. OISSP presented delegates with it’s first resource pack for use in schools. The bespoke materials being developed by OISSP support the programme of schools science projects for 2008 and 2009.
